Fibroma Treatment in Surfside Beach
An oral fibroma is a type of mouth sore that consists of localized connective tissue that becomes irritated and inflamed. The fibroma normally develops around the inside of the cheeks, or on the sides of the tongue or the lips. It may be pink or white in color and is usually firm to the touch.
Here are some reasons why you may develop an oral fibroma:
- Trauma to the mouth due to injury
- Bad habits such as biting your cheeks
- Ill-fitting dental appliances such as dentures
Treatment for Fibroma
Your dentist first determines the cause of your fibroma before embarking on treatment. For example, if your fibroma is caused by an ill-fitting dental appliance, treating the fibroma without correcting the problem will not help much. There are symptoms you can watch out for to recognize the condition early and stop it from progressing. These include:
- Unusual lumps in the mouth
- Rough surfaces inside the cheeks or on the gums
- Pale or dark patches of cheek and gum tissue
Our office may have to remove the fibroma through laser or surgical procedures:
Laser treatment – Your dentist will use a laser to sweep the fibroma-infected area several times until the lump is completely removed.
Surgical treatment - This is similar to laser treatment except that your dentist will use a scalpel to remove the fibroma.
Due to the normal cancer scare associated with the appearance of lumps, your dentist may request cancer tests to rule out any possibilities. However, fibroma is not in itself a cancerous lump, it only resembles the initial stages of some types of cancers. To address your worries, speak to our specialists today.
